Maddy Hettler ’23 joined us in September 2019 as our Community-Based Work Study student through the Upstate Institute and Max Shacknai Center for Outreach, Volunteerism and Education (COVE) at Colgate University.

Maddy is an international relations major at Colgate and spent the year working with Arts at the Palace in every area of operations. We appreciated her outstanding contributions and great spirit, especially during the shutdown!

From her home in New York City, Maddy worked remotely as a 2020 Upstate Institute Field School Fellow on a project identifying the arts and cultural assets of the Hamilton area. This research was vital to our 2021 Hamilton Summer Arts Fest initiative, for which we had received a NY State Regional Economic Development grant.

Drew Tompkins ’23 is our 2021 Upstate Institute Field School Fellow. This summer, Drew completed a hand-on research project “Reopening the Palace,” which included interviewing professional artists working at the Palace during COVID-19 as well as conducting a survey of our audiences to learn about their needs and wishes as we open our doors for live performances this year.

As part of his project, Drew served as the production assistant for the Palace’s 2021 From Script to Stage play development program and assisted us in all areas of general operations, from creating socially-distanced seating plans to grant-writing to curating our new fall music series. Drew’s help has been truly invaluable, and we hope to continue working with him this fall as a freelance technical assistant.
