Contra dance is a lively social dance that is easy to learn and doesn't require any previous experience to participate. All dances will be taught on the spot by the caller. We will employ non-gendered language while steps are called in order to encourage everyone to try both roles of leading and following. This event is a great way to connect with the community, make new friends, and get your body moving!

COMMUNITY SQUARE DANCE & CONCERT

We are proud to be hosting "Dark Skies in Appalachia Community Square Dance & Concert" -- a fun night to wrap up Colgate University's "Arts, Creativity, and Innovation Weekend" featuring The Sea The Sea, Wild Ponies, and Danny Schmidt.

The Dark Skies in Appalachia is a three day symposium, April 4-6, 2024, where writers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, scholars, and scientists will converge on the campus of Colgate University in the Village of Hamilton to share their work, ideas, and insights related to one of humanity’s first and most intimate connections to the natural world. We hope you can join us!

The Community Square Dance and Concert is a celebration featuring percussive dancer and seasoned caller Becky Hill with live music by The Sea The Sea, Wild Ponies, and Danny Schmidt. Absolutely no prior square dancing experience required.

Admission to the Dance is free and open to the public. Please come and join in on the fun!

Community Inclusion Project

In the spring of 2024, the Studio be utilized in a collaboration with Heritage Farm (www.heritagefarminc.org) and Colgate University for a Community Inclusion Project centered around neurodiversity.

During the program the group will learn about the process of songwriting and music/video production.

Arts at the Palace board member Regina Conti, in the department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Colgate University, is helping to create this meaningful program! Regina’s research investigates motivational processes in school, work, health, and family contexts. Much of this work has explored the link between intention and action. Most recently, she is exploring how the motivational dynamics of family life are influenced by a diagnosis of autism in a child or children. She is committed to supporting community efforts to enhance the lives of those with autism and related disorders.

Join Mark Shiner & The Houseband as they present various artists and repertoire each month at 12 noon. This month will feature Rick Montalbano, Brian Stark, Rich Mollin and a special guest Jeff Stockham.

Trumpeter Jeff Stockham is well-known to jazz fans in the upstate New York region. A graduate of Syracuse University and the Eastman School of Music (and a veteran of the renowned Eastman Jazz Ensemble), he is trumpeter and French hornist in Thelonius Monk Jr.'s "Monk on Monk" big band, with which he has toured Europe, Israel, and the United States several times, and with which he has performed at major international jazz festivals and concert venues with jazz luminaries such as Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Watson, Don Braden, Howard Johnson, Danilo Perez, Gerri Allen, Diane Reeves, Nnenna Frelon, Kevin Mahogany, Marcus Roberts, John Fedchock, and Joe Henderson. He has toured Europe and Africa with Chicago blues guitarist Jimmy Johnson, and has also toured as a member of the orchestra for the national touring company of Les Miserables. His other performance credits read like a Who's Who of the New York State music scene, having performed with the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, the Salt City Jazz Collective, the MK Groove Orchestra, JazzBone, the Stan Colella Orchestra, the Mario DeSantis Orchestra, Little Georgie & the Shufflin' Hungarians, Larry Arlotta, the Bearcat Jass Band, Gap Mangione, Joe Salzano & the Blue Devils, Atlas, Gap Mangione, Danny D'Imperio's Big Band Bloviation, the Syracuse Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and many others. He has backed up numerous national acts including Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra Jr., Rosemary Clooney, Aretha Franklin, Harry Connick Jr., Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Al Martino, Jimmy Cavallo, Don Rickles, Jerry Vale, Leslie Gore, Shari Lewis, and many others. His current jazz sextet, The Jazz Police, is a Central New York all-star ensemble comprised of some of the top jazz musicians in the region. Jeff is also one of the few musicians worldwide to play jazz on French horn.

Beyond “Facts vs. Opinions”

Presenter: Ben Lennertz is a Professor of Philosophy at Colgate University specializing in the Philosophy of Language, Epistemology, and Philosophy of Mind. He is widely published and has received a number of fellowships and prizes. Ben will be presenting "Beyond 'Facts vs. Opinions'" at the monthly LifeLong Learning Program this Friday, March 29th, at 2:30pm held here at Arts at the Palace.

Many grade schools teach the fact/opinion distinction. In this course, we’ll discuss whether this distinction cuts off space for public debate – by presenting ‘facts’ as settled and ‘opinions’ as outside the realm of evidence and argument. We’ll explore whether there is a better way to conceptualize the underlying phenomena.

  We will kick off the celebrations by making a public declaration establishing Seuss Saturday 2024! A special story time will follow the proclamation as well as crafts and games.

  Head over to the Palace Theater for a LIVE Seussi-cal sing-a-long with Jenni Larchar of Jenni’s Music Studio! Kids of all ages are welcome to sing and dance along.

"Love Letters" at The Palace Theater in Hamilton

Arts at the Palace in Hamilton, NY has announced a special Valentine’s event featuring A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist, “Love Letters.” The play unfolds a half-century of notes, letters and cards exchanged between two characters played by local actors Laurie Marshall and Ted Lenio.

Gurney’s play chronologically covers ‘Melissa’ and ‘Andrew’s’ correspondence from early school days to maturity, as they discuss their dreams and disappointments, hopes and ambitions, victories and defeats. For over 35 years it has been performed by hundreds of famous actors too numerous to mention, who bring eclectic interpretations of contrasting characters who share what it means to be in a relationship or friendship, have a confidant, and/or be “in love.”

Lenio is a NYS and regional award-winning playwright, director and actor whose theatrical arc spans 45 years, beginning in Aspen, Colorado, as ‘Charlie Chan.’ He has especially enjoyed exploring more troubled characters as they come to better understand themselves and others.

“Ever since stage managing ‘Love Letters’ for the U.S. Embassy cultural attache and his wife in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the 1990s, I’ve wanted to reprise this play,” Lenio commented. “And ever since performing with Laurie in ‘Twelfth Night’ at the Rome Art and Community Center too many years ago, I’ve wanted to team up with her again,” he added.

Marshall’s theatrical background is similarly varied and also includes such distinctive characterizations as ‘Harpo Marx’ in “A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine.” She has worked in props, costuming, stage managing, and made her directorial debut with “Hound of the Baskervilles.”

Complementing the play will be musical selections performed by pianist Jo Ann Geller and saxophonist Pete Ruben, both before the show and during intermission, which specifically relate to the characters’ lives.

The one-night-only performance is set for Friday, February 16, 7:30 pm (music at 7:00) at the Palace Theater, 19 Utica Street in Hamilton, NY.

Tickets are $10 and available at www.artsatthepalace.org. Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for $4.

Presenter: Katherine Kuharic is Professor of Art at Hamilton College. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad with a number of solo exhibitions. She has received many awards and honors, most recently, the Emily Harvey Foundation Fellowship in Venice, Italy.
