About The Apprenticeship

Arts At The Palace Arts Administration Apprenticeship is a paid, nine-month program for early-career artists and creative professionals seeking practical experience in arts administration, creative practice, program delivery, and community engagement. 

The apprenticeship combines three areas:

Arts Administration

Practical experience in programming, event production, marketing, teaching, gallery support, and administration.

Professional Development

Mentorship, workshops, access to facilities and equipment, and opportunities to present work.

Creative Practice

Time and support to develop original work and share it publicly in person and online.

Who Should Apply?

Arts at the Palace is accepting applications from a range of disciplines including music, theater, dance, digital design, media/production, and visual arts and craft.

This apprenticeship is designed for individuals who are not currently enrolled in full-time education. Recent graduates, gap-year participants, and individuals pursuing part-time education are encouraged to apply.

Professional Development

Apprentices will work alongside the executive director, Board of Directors, volunteers, visiting professionals, and other artists to advance the organization’s goals.

Responsibilities may include:

• Teaching or assisting with arts programs and workshops.

• Supporting performances, exhibitions, gallery openings, and community events.

• Assisting with event production, artist hospitality, front-of-house operations, and technical setup

• Developing and distributing marketing, promotional, and digital content.

• Completing administrative, scheduling, communication, and project-coordination assignments.

• Preparing and maintaining facilities, equipment, and public spaces.

• Communicating professionally with artists, participants, volunteers, and community partners.

• Specific assignments will reflect organizational needs as well as each apprentice’s skills, experience, and artistic discipline.

CREATIVE PRACTICE

Apprentices are expected to maintain an active creative practice outside their scheduled organizational work hours. Each apprentice will establish goals for a project or body of work and share that work publicly throughout the year.

Arts At The Palace will support this work through:

• Access to available equipment and organizational resources.

• Connections with professional artists and mentors.

• Workshops in arts administration, creative practice, production, and professional development.

• Opportunities to produce, present, exhibit, perform, publish, or document original work.

Qualifications

Strong candidates will demonstrate:

• An active artistic or creative practice in music, theatre, dance, visual art, gallery work, media, photography, digital design, writing, storytelling, or a related field.

• Previous work, a portfolio, relevant experience, or creative projects they can discuss or share.

• Interest in developing both artistic and arts-administration skills.

• Dependability, initiative, organization and communication skills.

• The ability to complete assignments with limited supervision.

• A willingness to contribute to both creative projects and routine operational work.

• Comfort working collaboratively with artists, volunteers, students, families, and community members.

• Availability for scheduled evening and weekend events.

• A willingness to assist with event setup, cleanup, equipment movement, and other practical responsibilities.

A bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in a related academic program is preferred but not required. Relevant artistic, professional, production, volunteer, educational, or community experience will also be considered - our goal is to provide equitable opportunities while fostering the full creative potential of each apprentice.

About The Organization

Arts At The Palace (ArtsAtThePalace.org) Center For Creative Development  is a small, rural arts and cultural center located in Hamilton, NY dedicated to helping people create, share, and experience art in order to improve lives and strengthen communities.

We take a holistic approach to developing the arts and culture through what we call Creative Capacity Building.

By supporting the full breadth of the artistic process and a collaborative arts ecosystem, we are building a more resilient, vibrant, and connected community.

In addition to a range of annual programming, Arts At The Palace operates The Palace Theater, a multi-purpose performing arts and production venue, and Hamilton Center For The Arts Fine Art Gallery and Studio.

Program Administration

The Arts At The Palace Apprenticeship Program is promoted through vocational and academic institutions, arts industry networks, and relevant collegiate and professional conferences.

Applicants complete an online application and may select up to three apprenticeship areas in order of preference. Required materials may include a cover letter, résumé with references, and relevant work samples or portfolio materials.

Applications are reviewed by Arts At The Palace staff and Board of Directors. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an interview.

Apprenticeships are competitive and awarded based on:

• Demonstrated interest and relevant experience

• Academic, professional, or personal achievement

• Applicable technical and creative skills

Summary

Organization: Arts At The Palace Center for Creative Development 501c3 

Location: Hamilton, New York

Apprenticeship  Period: Late August–Early May

Schedule: 10 scheduled work hours per week, including some evenings and weekends

Compensation: $650/month, plus access to facilities, equipment, professional mentorship, and workshops.
